The BCRT is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and is a joint initiative of Europe's largest university hospital, the Charité, and Germany's largest research organization, the Helmholtz association. The Center is based on a highly interactive research program and a consortium of internationally acknowledged experts in both basic and clinical science with a track record of successful scientific cooperation.
It aims to develop an internationally visible center of excellence in regenerative medicine with a focus on targeted cell differentiation for promoting endogenous tissue regeneration, translate basic science discoveries into regenerative therapies and share scientific knowledge generated in the field of regenerative medicine with researchers, clinicians, and the public through educational activities, training, publications, and communication forums at national and international level.
The program comprises work in five medical research fields linked to the overlapping platforms of basic research, bioengineering, and translational research. Initially, the Center will put particular emphasis on research and clinical programs related to musculoskeletal and immunological applications. In addition, the Center will focus on regenerative therapies for the cardiovascular system, the nervous system, and liver-related applications.
